Comfortable, layed back, wonderful hospitality & an interesting staircase!

TripAdvisor Rating: 4/5

From the moment we arrived and were conducted to our commodious chamber we were impressed. A 'family' room with a double, single, ensuite and tea and coffee making facilities. The bar was interesting with staff who could hold a conversation instead of the usual grunt of acknowledgement applied by so many bar staff. Very interesting building with an incredible cantilever staircase which must date from the early 18th century. Small bar / breakfast room which obviously has great potential. The breakfast was delightful and the owner took time to have a chat about the building and his hopes and aspirations for the business.

One question remains; how the heck did a stagecoach manage to climb the very steep slope to what must have been the stables at the top of the yard? We will certainly be back for more and will watch the enthusiastic pair who run it with so much determination.

Excellent value for money, friendly owners/staff and good location

TripAdvisor Rating: 4/5

Small, very friendly pub with well appointed rooms. Spacious en-suite accommodation; very well decorated, comfortable and we had a king size bed in our room. The towels are of an higher than average standard and the shower was powerful - which was a pleasant surprise. Breakfast was delicious and we ate at the restaurant one evening and for the Sunday lunch and on all occasions the food was superb. The landlords were concerned that we had booked when there was a function in the large room below our bedroom for one night - they did offer to move us, but it was fine and we had a good night's rest. The pub also does a good range of real ales rather than just lager, which makes a change and seems common in most of the pubs in this area. The hotel has it's own dedicated car park. Would definately go back.

Best hotel so far

TripAdvisor Rating: 5/5

We've just returned from a night at the Red Lion where we were made to feel extremely welcome and relaxed. Lovely, spacious room, cosy fires in the bars, fantastic breakfast and a friendly , efficient staff. Fantastic value for money and definitely the best hotel we've stayed at so far in the Peak District!

Excellent

Rating: 11/10!

Guys, thanks for putting on such an EXCELLENT celebration for our 25th on 15th May. 11 out of 10!

Friendly, caring service in the heart of the Peak District

TripAdvisor Rating: 5/5

When we were touring the Peak District we stopped early in the afternoon because my husband was feeling unwell. There was a large function in progress when we arrived but the staff were quick to accommodate us. This lovely old hotel has been recently refurbished and provides large, comfortable rooms with ensuite. Overnight my husband's condition deteriorated and next morning, Paul, the Owner, happily made a Doctor's appointment for us and extended the check-out time until we returned. We were pleased to stay an extra day, allowing my husband time to recover.

Unfortunately we left behind a folder of information. On contacting Paut, he first enquired about my husband's health and willingly agreed to mail the folder to us. Great service! On site parking is an additional plus.

Wirksworth is an interesting old town, which is an ideal base for touring the Peak District and the Red Lion Hotel is an ideal place to stay.

Lovely, friendly place to stay

TripAdvisor Rating: 4/5

Me and my partner took some time out to visit the Peak District. We were lucky to find The Red Lion as we hadn't booked anywhere. We were made to feel really comfortable, had a super newly decorated room and we very well treated by the staff. On one of the nights there was a party in the function room which we were invited to. It was a great night, superb venue.

We would recommend the Red Lion to everyone.

Small town centre hotel recently refurbished

If you need a hotel in Wirksworth, this will have to be it, there isn't much choice. Its a pub with rooms, but the place has recently been done up by the new owners and they made a nice job of the bedrooms. They're still getting the hang of it, but the bedroom was clean and tidy. Didn't eat in the hotel (there are other places in the town to eat, the Mistral was nice), but you can park at the hotel, drive in (carefully!) through the arch and the car park is part of a kind of courtyard. There are some pictures of it on Flickr.
